Perspectival Type

During his final year of studies, Felix developed an experimental typographic sculpture, which shows three different messages simultaneously. Depending on the viewer’s perspective, the shapes and forms shift into place to form different letters and words. To make this possible, a new kind of typeface had to be designed, addressing all the unexpected restrictions and problems raised when designing for three possible vantage points.

After Perspectival Type had been published in various magazines and blogs, we received an email from Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan, asking whether it would be possible to expand the project to include both Arabic and Latin script, spelling out the words ‘Peace’ and ‘Al-Salam’ (Arabic for ‘peace’). After a lot of head-scratching, conversations with Arabic script experts and many prototypes, Felix found a way to elegantly combine the two scripts. With the help and expertise of fantastic model makers chalk studio, the final result has the desired lightness and simplicity, while retaining authority with its ever-relevant message.
